The anthem originally consisted of three stanzas, but since the end of World War II, only the third stanza has been used officially. The first stanza, which begins with the famous line "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" (Germany, Germany above all), was associated with the nationalist sentiments of the 19th and early 20th centuries, including the period of Nazi rule. Because of its association with the Nazi regime, the use of the first stanza is now considered controversial and is not part of the official anthem.
The lyrics emphasize the values of unity, justice, and freedom for the German people. The anthem is often played at official events and ceremonies in Germany.
Lyrics:
Unity and justice and freedom
For the German fatherland!
Let us all strive for that
In brotherhood with heart and hand!
Unity and justice and freedom
Are the pledge of happiness;
Flourish in the radiance of this happiness,
Flourish, German fatherland.
